As a first-generation immigrant and the first in her family to graduate from college, Cynthia Gomez has crafted a career in publishing that demonstrates her passion for education as a tool for transformation at the personal, community, and global levels.  

 

She began her career as a newspaper reporter, covering mostly education and social justice issues in Massachusetts. She fled the newspaper industry in the early 2000s, as newsrooms everywhere shrank and news publishers wondered how to make paywalls pay off. She spent most of the two decades since her exodus from newspapers writing, editing, designing, and publishing professional development subscription publications, books, and other content for audiences in the higher education space. Much of that has entailed providing legal compliance and best-practices content to professionals working in student affairs, adult-serving and online programs, disability services, counseling, campus safety, and various other practice areas.

 

In 2017, she launched her own company, CG Communication & Design, providing customized editorial and design solutions to a wide variety of organizations. Her clients have included a local government agency, a large online university, two book publishers, two higher education trade organizations, a knowledge management company, a digital marketing agency, and several education consultants. During that time, she has done everything from produced courses for a large, online university to edited and published a myriad of books and academic journals to managed teams of content creators. She has edited more master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and academic journal articles than she cares to count.

 

An entrepreneur at heart, Cynthia also owns several other small businesses: StoryTime Me, which transforms people’s life stories into professionally written and illustrated children’s books; Light Rising Publishing, an indie hybrid publishing house; and The Gaia Revolution, a wellness retreat company. She’s also forever involved in some sort of animal rescue work.

 

Cynthia has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in digital journalism and design. She currently splits her time between Florida and North Carolina with her dog, cat, and husband. While she looks forward to seeing more of the country in their RV, she monetized her hobbies and hasn’t yet figured out the whole work/life balance thing because she enjoys everything she does so much.
